Spirulina is fast becoming the new active ingredient used by
the cosmetic chemists of this millennium.
Spirulina is a microscopic blue-green algae. It is a vegetable plankton whose cells form the shape of a coiled spring (thus the name "Spirulina" which means spiral.)
Spirulina is high in amino acid content (all 9 Essential amino acids) and Essential Fatty Acids, and the much needed Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids.
Unlike other plants and animals, Spirulina does not have complicated bodies and bio-chemistries to maintain.
Its total function is to produce
protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, amino acids, protective pigments, and many other vital nutrients so important in human
health. In fact it has everything you need to live on, and is often
referred to as the "super-food".
It is these vital nutrients that cosmetic chemists look to for their formulations. With the huge move away from animal bi-
products being used in cosmetics, the cosmetics chemists challenge was to find replacement actives with an acceptable
green image that worked.
Spirulina is that active ingredient, and when an active has a direct affinity to the structure and function of the skin and can be metabolised from surface application, we have something very special indeed..
The trend towards marine based products, sea- weeds and fresh water algae's has been happening for over 25 years. Many respected biologists and scientists have proven them to be very effective cosmetic ingredients.
Spirulina
has taken the beauty industry by storm, with its high amino acids profile,
